David Beckham Academy Cup

18th December 2009

Back to News

Players from the Army, Royal Navy and RAF joined forces with The BFF to take part in this year's David Beckham Academy 'European Corporate Cup'.

Having failed to score even a single goal in three previous campaigns, this year The BFF were unlucky not to go all the way through to the final.

The team, managed by the legend Denis Wise and playing as St Etienne, topped their group, winning all three opening matches – 2-0, 2-0 and 3-0 respectively.

But having secured their place in the quarter-finals, their goal scoring touch suddenly deserted them and at full-time the match was goalless. The game went to penalties and one saved spot-kick was all it took to prevent The BFF marching onwards.

This was the first year that David Beckham was unable to attend the event in person, but his boots were ably filled by England and Chelsea defender John Terry.

There were many other footballing icons at the tournament including the likes of Ossie Ardilles and Arsenal favourites Paul Merson, Ray Parlour and Martin Keown.
